Volunteering Roles: Working Directly with Children
Do you know how to work with children? This job requires special training and psychological skills. That’s why a lot of young people who would like to volunteer refuse this idea. But dealing with kids is not the only role accepted in the education sector. In a continuation of an overview of things to do to strengthen our schools, we have made up a list of non-trivial activities for volunteers at schools.
Start a club
An after-school club is a place where children can do different activities in a fun way. They draw, sing, take sports, or play games. They may well learn subjects that are not taught at school as a part of the curriculum (for example, coding or programming). As a volunteer, feel free to organize events that don’t require strict rules.
Let it be an interactive game for children who wish to know more about artificial intelligence. Or, perhaps, take up a karaoke class for those who want to sing. Maybe, you know that in a certain school some useful subject is not taught. By the way, here we are talking about how important it is to teach kids personal finances basics.
Here, you don’t teach, you are just sharing knowledge. Children are not your pupils. They are your friends.
Propose to take up an exciting sports
At schools, the number of sports in the curriculum is usually limited. Pupils do athletics, play basketball, go running, etc. Children easily get used to doing these sports activities. But, as long as they are young, curious, and full of ambitions, kids always wish to try more. Think about what you can organize. Or better make a survey! Maybe, they would like to do tai chi or try any martial arts. Possibly, they wish to know the rules of squash or rugby.
Create a coaching program
If you don’t have enough power to make lessons, you can always be a mentor or coach. For example, you may cooperate with older friends and organize digital courses for children. While they are teaching kids the basics of any subjects, feel free to provide pupils with mentorships or coaching. It means you need to support children. For instance, you can invite kids in special groups, support them in conducting daily activities, and write comments to encourage them to study more. You can also be a source of inspiration for them. Talk to kids about how important education can be. Don’t let them give up!
Join Parent Teaching Associations
Parent Teaching Associations or PTAs are the organizations aimed at making schools a better place, as explained by High-Speed Training. Their role is to find the money for interesting events that a school cannot afford. Your tasks as volunteers can be to speak to pupils to figure out what they dream of doing. Then, you can raise funds on social media and inform the school communities about the processes going on.
Help with Event Management
Preparation of events always requires help. You can assist with finding the costumes. Or train kids to check if they are ready for the future concert. You may also advertise the venues, as an idea. If you have any other ideas for volunteering, feel free to contact us at 1Hour.
